Painting: Sloppy Heart No 1

Yesterday would have been my mother's birthday. She passed away in 2009. I loved my mom, even though our relationship could be contentious, and that the diseases that engulfed her spirit changed her into a person that could be very difficult and trying. I realize now that the way she was in the end was not who she had always been. She was a creative, odd soul, "weird" in a way only mothers can be, and though I was resistant at times--mothers and sons can be that way--I now see so much of her in me. I really don't want to talk about this any more.

I painted this yesterday. It was on my mind. I was inspired, to some extent, by the following song:

Mark Kozelek FTW! Sun Kil Moon announce new album with totes awesome titles!

Was utterly elated to see that Sun Kil Moon will release a new record! While there's no samples available yet, the description that was released today makes it sound like this is gonna be a really fun record. Yeah, I know, "fun" is never a word you use for the work of Mark Kozelek. Here's what that press release says:

Release Date May 29 - Caldo Verde Records Among The Leaves is the 5th full length album by Mark Kozelek under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Played almost entirely on nylon string guitar, this 17-song all original album was recorded between October 2011 and January 2012 in San Francisco. Among The Leaves - words which caught Mark’s attention from a John Connolly novel - finds Mark relaxed, singing playfully about his life as a musician while retaining the melancholic spirit of his 20 year catalog. Mark’s love for San Francisco and Northern California are at the heart of this new album. “My first album (Down Colorful Hill) was released in 1992” says Kozelek, “but creatively, I feel like I’m just beginning. The new album was written and recorded impulsively, without second guessing. I didn’t have that kind of confidence in the past.” Unlike Red House Painters’ epic Rollercoaster, described by Rolling Stone as “the slowest and mopiest self revelations ever put to tape” or Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway, which Billboard Magazine called “heartbreaking,” Among The Leaves displays a more raw and humorous side of Mark’s songwriting. Aaron Prellwitz, recording engineer of Red House Painters and all 5 Sun Kil Moon albums describes the latest effort as “wonderfully direct." Kozelek curiously ties together legends Joe Frazier, Bobby Fischer and Ed Gein in ‘The Winery’, ‘‘Song for Richard Collopy’ is a touching tribute to the late San Francisco guitar repairman, and ‘Sunshine In Chicago’ – written just before taking the stage at a Chicago venue last year – is a funny, self deprecating poke at life on the road. Though Among The Leaves is mostly in the solo, nylon string style of Admiral Fell Promises, a new ensemble of players joined Mark for a portion of the record, recalling the same spirit as April and Tiny Cities, but with a fresh, new sound.

But here's the best part. Check out those song titles!

1. I Know It’s Pathetic But That Was The Greatest Night Of My Life
2. Sunshine In Chicago
3. The Moderately Talented Yet Attractive Young Woman vs. The Exceptionally Talented Yet Not So Attractive Middle Aged Man
4. That Bird Has A Broken Wing
5. Elaine
6. The Winery
7. Young Love
8. Song For Richard Collopy
9. Among The Leaves
10. Red Poison
11. Track Number 8
12. Not Much Rhymes With Everything’s Awesome At All Times
13. King Fish
14. Lonely Mountain
15. UK Blues
16. UK Blues 2
17. Black Kite

Crepuscular Chill-Out: The Bodysnatchers "Easy Life"

Happy President's Day!

Fun fact: the above image, a tour poster for the wonderful TAD, so offended their record label that they were promptly dropped when executives learned of it.

It's that time of year again, wherein we honor those valiant souls who served--and some who died in the service of--as the Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America. You may not like whoever is in office, but the office itself is worthy of respect. Here are some musical tributes I think you will enjoy:

The EP, entitled Imaginary Summer, will be released digitally next Tuesday via Brushfire Records. According to the exciting press release, this EP contains six tracks, five originals and a Talking Heads cover.

Welcome back, Dandy Warhols!

From the interwebs:

The Dandy Warhols will release their tenth Long Playing Maxigroove®, entitled THIS MACHINE, on April 24, 2012 through The End Records. The release, produced by The Dandy Warhols and Jeremy Sherrer, is made up of eleven songs written by Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Brent DeBoer, Zia McCabe, and guests David J (Love and Rockets, Bauhaus) and Miles Zuniga (Fastball). The album’s cover was painted by artist Hickory Mertsching. Here is "The Wow Signal," which may or may not be on THIS MACHINE:

The lovely and talented Sophia Knapp will release her solo debut, Into the Waves, on February 28th, via Drag City. As a fan of her band Cliffie Swan, I can tell you I am eagerly awaiting this record.

Colourbox "Shotgun"

That post earlier about Colourbox led me to pulling out my old Colourbox records...this song, opening their self-titled EP from 1983, still sounds like nothing else....

Our good friends in The Polyphonic Spree have announced the second phase of their touring schedule. Additionally, today they announced the winner in their fan-made video contest for latest single, "What Would You Do?" Congrats to Ben Rowe, it's a lovely video!
