SXSW Report #35: David Dondero @ Hilton 406

Years ago, I saw David Dondero open for the Preston School of Industry at Stubb’s. He had a backing band with him then, but he sounded much better by himself tonight. He has a strong but unshowy voice and can play finger-style acoustic guitar pretty well. His songs were full of dark humor, obscure geographical references and catchy choruses. It seemed as if most of the people in attendance were there specifically to see him. As his set progressed, he took more and more audience requests, many of which were for songs from his latest album, South of the South. This impressed me, because I’ve been to too many shows where all the audience wants to hear is old songs.
