A Letter From The Editor

I have an announcement to make about Mundane Sounds.

First, you will notice that we've redesigned the site. I like it. It's very....minimal. I like minimalism. I like having things that aren't big and flashy and overwhelm the content. So I hope you like it, too. I was going to do this on Monday, but I just couldn't wait to share it with you!

At the beginning of this year, I decided to switch over from a more static website to a blog format. I don't regret that decision at all. But somewhere along the line, something changed. I don't know what that something was, but it relates to feeling bogged down in an ever-increasing "blogosphere," where everyone has a mp3 blog and the overwhelming amount of opinions have clouded the world, polarizing things and compartmentalizing things in such 'neat' little boxes. The world isn't that pigeonholed. Why pigeonhole your artistic experience? I don't dig that. That's an entirely different rant, though.

Next week, Mundane Sounds will begin a new chapter in its five-year history. Our site will focus less on personal opinions and will focus more on trying to capture and understand that evasive goddess, music. We will spend more time talking to the artists about the music that they make. Our predilections will take a backseat, because, really, everyone has an opinion. My personal tastes---well, they're just that, my personal tastes. You can visit other websites and read about the 'next big thing.' That just doesn't interest me any more; I want to understand the artist, not pontificate on their creation. And when I talk about something or I talk to an artist, it's with the understanding that they are worth your time. Why talk about something you don't like or don't care for? It just seems so insincere. The people we talk to will be people worth listening to. The records we talk about will be records you need to know about. We don't care about being hip or trying to wow you with the latest unknown band. That's just not exciting.

But guess what? The things we have in store are exciting. I hope you enjoy them. I know I am excited about what's coming up. But thank you for five years of readership! I couldn't do it without you. We told you this year would bring lots of exciting changes. I don't think you'll be disappointed!
